Living with Trauma

The international premiere of A Different Kind of Different was followed by illustrated talks that considered the physical and psychological manifestations of trauma. Participants included medical tattoo pioneer Mary Jane Haake; writer, editor and curator Anna McNay; artist Jade Montserrat; writer for performance, page and video Sally O’Reilly; Curator of Exhibitions at the Science Museum, London, Clare Barlow; and the artist, Jordan Baseman.

A screening of the film was followed by illustrated presentations that examined agency and health, the patient-doctor relationship, 'patient-centred care', and the lasting impact of trauma on our sense of self. Participants included leading specialist consultant breast surgeon Fiona MacNeill; artist Lindsay Seers; John Troyer, Director of the Centre for Death and Society; curator, educator and writer George Vasey; curator and writer Jes Fernie; and Jordan Baseman.

Reclaiming the Body

The final event in the series explored physical declarations of intent that signify the reclamation of a changed body or self. Participants included artist and filmmaker Mania Akbari; European tattoo historian Dr Gemma Angel; Dr Anees Chagpar, Professor of Surgery (Oncology) at Yale School of Medicine; artist John Walter; art historian, writer and curator Professor Gemma Blackshaw; and Jordan Baseman.
